One of a Kind
Mitchell South Dakota has the one and only Corn Palace, I'd say it's well worth a road trip or an unplanned detour some evening while on vacation. This image was captured late Springtime when it is dark enough after 9pm to watch the colorful transformation take place.
Cascading Falls
It was Summer of 2019, I was spellbound as always by the Big Sioux River as it cascaded over the Sioux Quartzite at Falls Park in Sioux Falls South Dakota!
Structural Integrity
My goal for this shot of the Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City was to highlight the interesting German style architecture, the city lights helped too.
Cascading Moonlight
This long exposure image was captured under a full Strawberry Moon at the Big Sioux River in Falls Park, Sioux Falls South Dakota. Last Summer during blue hour, the Big Sioux River was absolutely stunning as it cascaded over the Sioux Quartzite in Falls Park.
Of Earth and Sky
It was very early on this beautiful Spring morning in May that I made a special trip to Chamberlain South Dakota just to watch the sunrise with the Dignity sculpture.
Black Elk Peak
To capture this image of Black Elk Peak in the South Dakota Black Hills, I spent several months scouting out the best location from which to capture a single exposure photograph of the full Flower Moon going down in the West behind Black Elk Peak, formerly known as Harney Peak.
Friendship Tower
Also known as Theodore Roosevelt Monument built in 1919, this is a 31' tall stone tower honoring Theodore Roosevelt located in the South Dakota Northern Black Hills.
Facelift
In 2021 the entrance to Mount Rushmore was redesigned. This capture of the lighting ceremony is from March 2022, my previous image was captured in April 2019.
Technicolor Vision
No travel adventure in the Black Hills of South Dakota is complete without watching a Laser Light show at Crazy Horse Memorial.
Rustic Sunset
An old wagon catches a splash of color from the mid Autumn sunset at the High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish South Dakota.
Star Quilt
Early morning sunshine created this beautiful shimmering light on her star quilt, Dignity Statue near Chamberlain South Dakota.
Crazy Horse
Crazy Horse Memorial in the sacred Black Hills is a fascinating work of art dedicated to memorization of the Oglala Lakota warrior.
Capitol Sunset
The sky was completely overcast at the South Dakota Capitol in Pierre and I barely had time to set up this shot when the sky and reflections on the water exploded in vibrant color!
Arc of Dreams
I was excited to see this 70 foot tall stainless steel arc designed by Dale Lamphere which spans across the Big Sioux River in downtown Sioux Falls, it changes color with 18 LED light bulbs.
Flamboyant Display
An approaching thunderstorm gives this image an extra burst of color, at Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills.
Springtime at Mount Rushmore
While visiting Mount Rushmore in the South Dakota Black Hills this past Spring, I was hoping to capture a blazing sunset. However, on this particular evening the clouds created a rather pale watercolor sky after sundown.
Dignity Statue
I always pay her a visit whenever I'm in the Chamberlain South Dakota area, this stainless steel sculpture is especially stunning after sunset or before sunrise.
Captivated
A long exposure of Dignity with intentional blur of tourists next to the statue. I always pay her a visit whenever I'm in the Chamberlain South Dakota area, this stainless steel sculpture is especially stunning during sunset.
Colorful Reflections
After a Summer storm I was pleased to grab this artsy shot while in Art Alley downtown Rapid City.
Over the River
One of the first ever photos of the Arc of Dreams by Dale Lamphere at the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls.
Presidential View
When you travel along Iron Mountain Road this is the view from one of three tunnels, one of my favorite scenic drives in the Black Hills!
Purpling
While in Sioux Falls South Dakota I am always amazed to visit this fabulous stainless steel work of art by Dale Lamphere, the Arc of Dreams.
